Monteith Community – Plantation slave Roderick Steele’s courageous acts, along with those of other plantation slaves at the battles around Monteith, are credited with giving Savannah residents enough time to evacuate during the American Civil War. Legend says that Roderick Steele was the water man for Sherman. He is buried at the Richmond Baptist Church in Port Wentworth.
